Shelter

More than a roof

SafePlace offers a confidential shelter for women and their children as well as motel lodging for men and their children. We provide all clients with food, basic needs and 24 hour access to staff. At the shelter, we offer advocacy-based counseling, domestic violence and sexual assault support groups, legal and medical advocacy, assistance in housing and financial issues as well as childcare.

We are a goal oriented program. Many of the women that come to our shelter find themselves at the beginning of a new life. They have lived through emotional, financial, physical and / or sexual abuse. Some of them have lost everything when they left their abusive relationships and are starting out with virtually nothing. It is our goal to empower them and to support them in any way possible. In weekly advocacy appointments, the residents work out goals for the upcoming week as well as a long-term transition plan. The length of their stay at the shelter is determined by this transition plan and by the residents' utilization of SafePlace's program services.

At our shelter, we serve all people that identify as women regardless of their cultural background or sexual orientation. We try to serve women with disabilities and mental health issues as best we can. Residents are asked to respect differences and boundaries. We do not tolerate drugs or alcohol at the shelter. We offer support and assistance for residents dealing with issues of chemical dependency. Our shelter is a violence free environment. Our topmost concern is the safety of the residents. Although we serve all women and families in abusive situations, priority is given to those in high danger.

In her voice

The following story is an excerpt from a resident exiting our shelter. People like Crystal are why SafePlace exists.

“SafePlace is more than just a shelter. It’s a compassionate, caring place where my family found healing, as well as resources and advocacy to begin our new life in Thurston County. The atmosphere in the house was warm and respectful. My children and I felt safe at last, and were able to begin to access needed services without fear that we would need to leave before we had a more stable place to go.

I can’t express how much that meant to us.

Due to the information and advocacy given by SafePlace staff, I have been able to leave the program with a new hope and the resources to step out with confidence into a new life without fear. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

SafePlace is doing great work; staff facilitated my development of a viable plan toward independence and self-sufficiency for my family and then advocated to address barriers to our success. The staff was also sensitive to my family’s culture and values. I don’t know where my family would be without your help. It’s frightening to think what would have happened to us without your help and support. I pray that SafePlace will continue to provide safety and hope to families burdened by domestic violence and sexual assault. Be blessed.”
